A special injection molding process is the overmolding of metal inserts. In this process, complex components are produced in a plastic-metal bond in just one production step.

For the manufacturing process, the metal parts inserted into the injection mold are overmolded with hot plastic. The metal parts are then firmly bonded to the plastic component.

The tight bond between plastic and metal is playing an increasingly important role in connectors and in hybrid technology. These systems are implemented by overmolding metallic stamped grids, screens, cables or flat conductors. Sealed connections are used in industries where special hygienic requirements apply or protection against aggressive media and environmental influences is needed. Inserts are also used for construction stabilization. In the electrical industry, contact elements in particular are overmolded.

The joining of plastics and metals in injection molding is an established and popular technique today. The technique of overmolding is used particularly for structural parts or in connector systems. However, the trend is toward increasing requirements and, as a result, more complex components and metal overmolding.

Media tightness at the interfaces between metal and plastic is one such high requirement of plastic connections. This is to ensure that the function of the component and hybrid parts can be guaranteed throughout their entire service life.

The challenge of sealing the insert against the cavity to be filled with plastic to prevent burr formation meets the urgency of protecting high-quality surfaces of the inserts from scratching and damage.
